Introduction


Beijing Xinggu EDZ is located in Pinggu District in the north-eastern part of Beijing, about 70 km away from the city center of Beijing. Jing-Ping Expressway, connecting Beijing and Tianjin, is linked with the zone. Dalian-Qinghuangdao Railway goes through the zone; the zone is 18 km away from Beijing Railway Cargo Distribution Center, 40 km away from Beijing Capital International Airport and 130 km away from Tianjini Port. Beijing Capital International Airport was ranked the largest airport in terms of passenger throughput in 2007 and the second-largest airport in terms of cargo traffic in 2007. Tianjin Port, the largest port in North China, handled 309 million tons of cargo and 7.1 million TEUs in 2007 respectively.

Beijing has rich talent resources. There are eighty-three universities and colleges in Beijing, with the number of graduates amounting to 139,000 in 2007.

Investment Climate

In 2007, Pinggu's GDP soared 12.3% to RMB 7.2 billion, less than 1% of Beijing's GDP. The added value from the industry sector reached RMB 3.2 billion, contributing 44.5% to Pinggu's GDP.

The zone has developed auto parts, food processing and machinery as its major industries. The gross industrial output from these three major industries added up to RMB 5.7 billion, comprising over 91.9% of that from the zone.

Xingyu Auto Technology, with investments of US$85.9 million from Korea, is the largest foreign-invested company in Beijing Xinggu EDZ. It was set up in 2002 and specializes in pressing parts-manufacturing. In 2007, the gross industrial output from the firm reached RMB 1.2 billion, nearly one fifth of that of the zone.

Taiwan-based Want Want, a large food-processing firm, has seven plants in Beijing Xinggu EDZ. It has invested a total of US$50 million into the plants. In 2007, the gross industrial output from the seven plants grew 22% year-on-year to RMB 739 million, about one eighth of that of the zone.
